Dean Akey is Executive Vice President and Partner at Clone Capital, LLC, where he leads the firm’s commercial advisory, risk management, hedge origination, and asset optimization services.
With four decades of experience in competitive energy and natural gas markets, Dean has been actively involved in many of the industry’s most significant transformations. He was among the early pioneers of competitive electricity marketing, helping commercial and industrial customers navigate newly deregulated retail power markets before expanding into leadership roles supporting utilities, power marketers, independent power producers, renewable developers, and large energy consumers.
Throughout his career, Dean has held senior leadership positions with organizations including Tyr Energy, Edison Mission Marketing & Trading, Aquila Energy Marketing Corporation, and Illinois Power. His expertise spans wholesale and retail electricity markets, natural gas procurement and transportation, structured transactions, long-term power purchase agreements, asset optimization, risk management, and strategic commercial advisory services.
Today, Dean works closely with power generators, data center developers, industrial energy consumers, utilities, LNG facilities, and energy infrastructure investors to develop innovative solutions that transform energy from a cost center into a strategic advantage. Over the course of his career, he has helped clients capture more than $750 million in incremental value through commercial strategy, market optimization, and risk management initiatives.
Dean is a graduate of Illinois State University and a U.S. Army veteran. He strongly believes that long-term success in the energy industry is built upon trust, integrity, and lasting relationships, principles that continue to guide his professional and personal endeavors.
Dean joined the NAEMA Board of Directors in 2021 and currently serves as Secretary of the Association.
